Does Cholesterol Ratio Matter More Than Total Cholesterol for Heart Disease Risk?

I’ve been researching cardiovascular health recently and noticed that many doctors focus not only on total cholesterol but also on HDL and LDL balance when estimating heart disease risk.

While searching online, I found this free ASCVD Risk Calculator:
https://heartscorecalculator.com/

It calculates 10-year cardiovascular risk using blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes status, smoking history, and other factors from ACC/AHA pooled cohort equations.

I wanted to ask the community:

  • Is HDL cholesterol really as important as people say?
  • Can someone have normal total cholesterol but still high cardiovascular risk?
  • How much does smoking increase ASCVD risk scores?
  • Has anyone improved their heart risk through exercise and diet changes?
  • Are online heart disease risk calculators trustworthy enough for preventive screening?

Trying to learn more about preventive cardiology and how people monitor heart health before problems develop.
