If Kedarnath is where Lord Shiva resides, Triyuginarayan is where he was married. The Triyuginarayan Temple — situated in the remote Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand — is believed to be the exact spot where Lord Vishnu conducted the divine wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, while Brahma officiated as the priest. The name means “Lord of Three Ages” (Tri = three, Yuga = age, Narayan = Vishnu), signifying that Vishnu has been worshipped here across three cosmic ages.
The Eternal Fire (Akhand Dhuni)
The temple’s most remarkable feature is the eternal sacred fire (Akhand Dhuni) that has reportedly been burning continuously since the divine wedding took place. Pilgrims carry ash from this fire home as a sacred blessing — a symbol of eternal love and divine union. The fire is maintained by the temple priests and never allowed to extinguish.
The wedding ceremony used four sacred kunds (pools) near the temple — Brahma Kund, Vishnu Kund, Rudra Kund, and Saraswati Kund — each with its own spiritual significance.
Architecture and Sacred Kunds
The temple is built in the North Indian Nagara style with a distinctive shikhara. The four kunds near the temple complex are visited by devotees who offer prayers and seek blessings for marital happiness. Many newlywed couples visit Triyuginarayan specifically to receive blessings for their own marriage at the site of the greatest divine union.
How to Reach Triyuginarayan
- From Sonprayag: 12 km (30–40 minutes by taxi or jeep; road is motorable)
- From Gaurikund: 12 km via Sonprayag
- From Kedarnath (after darshan): Return to Sonprayag and take a taxi to Triyuginarayan
- Nearest town: Ukhimath (20 km)
Best Time to Visit
The temple is accessible from May to November. The most auspicious time to visit is during Vivah Panchami (the day celebrating the divine wedding of Rama and Sita — also observed as Shiva-Parvati wedding day at this temple).
Accommodation Near the Temple
Triyuginarayan village has minimal accommodation — basic dharamshalas at ₹300–₹800. Most visitors come as a day trip from Sonprayag, Ukhimath, or Guptkashi.
Combining with Kedarnath Yatra
The ideal combination is: Kedarnath darshan (Day 1–2) + Triyuginarayan day trip (Day 3) + Return to Rishikesh (Day 4). This way, you visit both the divine abode and the divine wedding venue in a single Kedarnath trip.
For devotees of the Shiva-Parvati tradition, Triyuginarayan offers something Kedarnath cannot — the intimate story of divine love, commitment, and eternal union.
