Rhodochrosite was first discovered in 1813 in the silver mines of Romania but it is also believed that it was also discovered in the 13th century in an ancient silver and copper mine in Argentina. Since ancient times it has been used in the creation of gemstone jewelry, and it is also said to symbolize selfless love, emotional healing and releasing pain. The Alma King, a rhodochrosite crystal measuring 14.25 centimeters on one side, is in the collection of the Denver Museum of Natural History. The Sweet Home Mine in Colorado is known for its rhodochrosite crystals that include the Alma King, the Ribbon, the Alma Rose and the Butterfly.
