In the mid-18th century, Dutch mineralogist and military commander Colonel Hendrik Von Prehn (1733-1785) discovered prehnite in Jurassic dolerite (volcanic rock) at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Prehnite was the first mineral to be named after a person and to be described from South Africa, long before the country became a major source of precious gems. Prehnite structures while hot, circling arrangements drain minerals from encompassing rocks and store them in veins or pits.
