Most attractive chalcedony gemstones are a combination of microcrystalline quartz and moganite. Don’t confuse moganite with morganite – moganite is another silica stone with an altogether different crystal structure than quartz. The percentage of moganite present in chalcedony typically varies between 1 to 20 percent. On the Moh’s hardness scale, chalcedony ranks anywhere between 6 to 7. Composed mainly of silicon dioxide, it can show white streaks.
